Military drills between US and South Korea cut short at Washington’s request

Chicago – August 19, 2026

The United States and South Korea have shortened their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercise following a request from Washington, marking a significant adjustment to the allies’ joint training program. The exercise, which began on August 17, was originally scheduled to continue for 11 days but will now run for five days, through August 21. The second phase, involving counterattack operations, has also been cancelled, while some field-training activities have been reduced.

President Donald Trump ordered a substantial reduction in U.S. participation, arguing that the exercises are costly and send an inappropriate signal to North Korea. He has also pointed to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and expressed interest in renewed diplomacy.

South Korean officials said they were not consulted before Washington’s decision. Nevertheless, both governments maintain that the remaining exercises are intended to preserve military readiness and are defensive in nature.

The move could create diplomatic opportunities with Pyongyang, but it also raises questions about allied readiness and the credibility of U.S. deterrence on the Korean Peninsula.
