Chicago – August 28, 2026

Social Security is approaching a critical financial crossroads, with policymakers in Washington facing increasing pressure to address the program’s long-term funding challenges. Current projections indicate that the Social Security trust funds could face depletion in the coming years, potentially triggering automatic reductions in benefits if Congress fails to act.
The looming shortfall has raised concerns among millions of retirees, workers and families who rely on Social Security as a major source of income. While the program would continue receiving payroll tax revenue, benefits could be reduced if the trust funds are exhausted.
Lawmakers have proposed a range of potential solutions, including raising payroll taxes, increasing the earnings subject to Social Security taxes, adjusting benefits and changing the retirement age. However, political divisions have made agreement difficult.
With the financial deadline approaching, advocates are urging Congress to move beyond short-term political debates and develop a long-term plan to protect Social Security benefits for current and future generations.
