Rohingya refugees in Malaysia are facing a growing wave of hostility, amid rising public anger over immigration, economic pressures and the government’s handling of undocumented migrants.

Malaysia hosts hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees who fled persecution and violence in Myanmar. Although the country has long provided a refuge for the community, tensions have intensified in recent years, with refugees increasingly facing online abuse, protests and calls for tougher immigration measures.

Human rights groups have warned that the backlash risks worsening discrimination against a vulnerable population. Rohingya refugees generally lack formal legal status in Malaysia, leaving many with limited access to employment, education and healthcare.
The latest hostility has also raised concerns about misinformation circulating on social media, which activists say can fuel resentment toward the Rohingya community.

Rights advocates are urging Malaysian authorities to protect refugees from discrimination while addressing public concerns through accurate information and humane immigration policies.
