Nearly 1,500 missing in Nepal and China after devastating Himalayan flash flood

Nearly 1,500 people are missing in Nepal and China’s Tibet region after a catastrophic flash flood swept through the Himalayan border area, according to authorities. At least 165 people have died, with the death toll expected to rise as rescue teams continue searching devastated communities. 

The disaster occurred after a massive landslide of ice and rock collapsed into a Himalayan river, unleashing torrents of mud, water and debris. Entire villages, roads, bridges and vehicles were swept away.

In Nepal, 826 people were reported missing, including almost 600 foreigners. China’s Tibet region reported another 558 missing, including 260 foreign nationals. Many victims were tourists and pilgrims traveling through the popular Himalayan region near Mount Kailash. 

More than 5,000 rescue personnel have been deployed, while helicopters are searching for survivors and delivering emergency supplies. Difficult mountain terrain and damaged infrastructure are hampering rescue efforts.
