The FBI is investigating reports of a massive data breach involving millions of U.S. and Canadian driver’s licenses. A dark-web service reportedly claimed to possess more than 153 million driver’s-license scans, along with other sensitive identity documents.
Cybersecurity researchers who examined the database found what appeared to be authentic licenses belonging to real individuals, raising concerns about identity theft, fraud and impersonation. The information contained in driver’s licenses can include names, addresses, dates of birth, photographs and signatures.
Investigators have not yet confirmed the exact source or full scale of the alleged breach. Reports have pointed to an identity-verification company as a possible source, although the connection remains under investigation.
The dark-web service reportedly disappeared after the findings were made public. Authorities are continuing to investigate how the information was obtained and whether additional personal data has been compromised.
