Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is pushing companies seeking city contracts to disclose whether their leadership reflects the diversity of the city’s population.
The proposal would require businesses competing for certain municipal contracts to provide information about the racial and demographic makeup of their leadership and ownership. The administration says the measure is intended to promote greater equity in Chicago’s contracting process and ensure public dollars reach a broad range of businesses.
Supporters argue that the city should consider diversity and inclusion when awarding taxpayer-funded contracts, particularly given longstanding concerns about unequal access to government business.
Critics, however, question whether the policy could create additional regulatory burdens for companies or turn demographic characteristics into a factor in contracting decisions.
The initiative comes as Chicago continues efforts to expand opportunities for minority- and women-owned businesses and address disparities in the distribution of city contracts.
