Chicago – September 02, 2026
The Dutch central bank has moved around 86 tonnes of gold from the United States and Canada to Britain as part of a broader effort to strengthen its crisis preparedness.
De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) said the transfers, carried out between March and August 2026, were designed to improve the accessibility and tradability of its gold reserves during periods of severe financial or geopolitical disruption.
Following the move, London’s share of Dutch gold reserves increased from 18.1% to 32.1%. The proportion held in New York fell from 31.3% to 18.5%, while the share stored in Ottawa also declined to 18.5%. About 30.8% of the Netherlands’ gold remains stored domestically.
DNB emphasized that the move was not a rejection of the United States, but a diversification measure. The bank said London’s position as the world’s leading physical gold-trading center makes it an important location for quickly mobilizing reserves during a crisis.
