Two independent Muslim women journalists, Shaheen Khan and Nafeesa Khan, were assaulted by Delhi Police on September 3, according to a report published by The Observer Post.
The incident reportedly took place in Delhi and has prompted concern among journalists’ organisations and civil society groups. The Press Club of India and other journalists’ bodies have called for an investigation into the allegations and urged authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the report, the journalists alleged that police personnel subjected them to physical assault while they were carrying out their journalistic work. The allegations have raised questions about the treatment of journalists by law-enforcement authorities and the need to protect press freedom.
The journalists’ bodies have sought a fair and impartial probe, including accountability if any wrongdoing by police personnel is established. Authorities have yet to publicly establish the facts of the incident through an independent investigation.
