Tukaram Mundhe, Maharashtra’s food safety commissioner, is gaining national attention for a sweeping crackdown on unhygienic food businesses in Mumbai. Since taking charge in May, Mundhe has led more than 3,000 raids, targeting major restaurant chains, street vendors, hotels and historic eateries.Â
His teams have uncovered disturbing conditions, including rats, cockroaches, expired food and poor storage practices. Authorities have suspended permits at several outlets, including four Domino’s locations and one Pizza Hut. A McDonald’s outlet was also ordered to stop operating after inspectors reported pest activity and rotting food.Â
Mundhe’s campaign has earned widespread public support, with videos and images from raids spreading rapidly online. Some businesses, however, have criticized his aggressive approach and challenged enforcement actions in court.
Despite the criticism, Mundhe says his priority is protecting public health and ensuring businesses follow food safety rules.Â
