A major technical failure in Britain’s air traffic control system caused widespread disruption at airports across the United Kingdom on Tuesday, September 8.
More than 1,000 flights were cancelled, while hundreds more were delayed, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports and on aircraft for hours. Major airports affected included Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh.
The problem occurred in the flight-processing system operated by NATS, Britain’s air traffic control provider. NATS said engineers resolved the technical issue after several hours and confirmed that safety had not been compromised. However, the resulting backlog of aircraft and crews continued to cause delays.
Heathrow temporarily suspended arrivals, while airlines including British Airways, Ryanair and easyJet reported significant disruption. Ryanair said more than 65,000 passengers were affected.
Authorities warned that delays and cancellations could continue into Wednesday as airports worked to restore normal operations.
