Chicago January 6, 2025

President Joe Biden is calling on Americans to never forget the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. In an op-ed published in The Washington Post, Biden warned that the truth about that day must not be lost.

Biden recalled how a mob of supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election. Trump had encouraged his supporters to “fight like hell” on the morning of January 6.

Biden described Trump’s actions as a “genuine threat to democracy.” However, he expressed hope that the country has moved beyond that point.

The President emphasized the importance of remembering January 6, 2021, as a day when American democracy was tested and prevailed. He noted that democracy is never guaranteed, even in the United States.

Biden urged Americans to commit to defending and protecting democracy, which he said makes possible the country’s freedoms, rights, liberties, and dreams. His remarks were published on the eve of the fourth anniversary of the January 6 attack.
