Tulsi Gabbard, President Donald Trump’s nominee for Director of National Intelligence (DNI), has cleared her first hurdle. The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence voted to advance her nomination, with all Republican members supporting her.
Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Tom Cotton played a key role in securing Republican support. He set up a “war room” to promote Gabbard’s nomination and worked closely with other senators, including Kyrsten Sinema and Richard Burr.
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, wrote an op-ed in Newsweek addressing concerns about her views on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. She argued that she is the right choice to lead the Office of National Intelligence.
Gabbard’s nomination will now move to the full Senate for consideration. If confirmed, she will oversee the nation’s intelligence agencies, despite having no prior experience in senior government roles.
