President Trump’s recent executive order has sparked controversy as it directs the transfer of undocumented immigrant criminals to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. This move will see them sharing facilities with the last 15 remaining detainees at the infamous prison camp.
Guantánamo Bay was established by former President George W. Bush in 2002 to hold terrorism suspects and “illegal enemy combatants” following the 9/11 attacks. Since then, approximately 780 detainees have been held there.
The Trump administration plans to expand the facility to accommodate up to 30,000 undocumented immigrants deemed “criminal aliens.” U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will oversee the facility’s operations, according to Border Czar Tom Homan.
Flights to the facility have already begun, with 10 members of a violent Venezuelan gang arriving recently. The move is part of the administration’s efforts to ramp up deportation efforts and strengthen border security.
