Chicago February 17, 2025

A migrant shelter in San Diego is closing its doors and laying off 115 employees. The Jewish Family Service of San Diego, which ran the shelter, said it’s because of changes in federal funding and policy.

The shelter helped over 248,000 people seeking asylum in the past six years. However, since the CBP One phone app stopped working on January 20, no new families or individuals have been sent to the shelter.

The CBP One app allowed immigrants to make appointments at ports of entry to enter the US. It was created during Trump’s first administration and expanded in 2023. By the end of December, over 936,500 individuals had used the app to request parole into the US.

The Jewish Family Service of San Diego will continue to provide pro bono legal services and community support resources to immigrants and vulnerable members of the community.
