A federal judge on Friday stopped most of President Donald Trump’s executive orders that aimed to end government support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.
Judge Adam Abelson in Baltimore issued a temporary ruling to prevent the government from canceling or changing federal contracts related to equity programs. He said the orders likely violate the U.S. Constitution, including free speech rights.
On his first day in office, Trump signed an order telling federal agencies to cut all funding for DEI-related grants and contracts. He later signed another order requiring federal contractors to prove they do not promote DEI.
The White House did not respond to requests for comment on Friday evening.
The lawsuit against the Trump administration was filed by the city of Baltimore and education groups. They argue that the orders are unconstitutional and go beyond the president’s authority. They also say the policies limit free speech.
“What’s happening is an overreaction that is restricting DEI statements,” said attorney Aleshadye Getachew during a court hearing on Wednesday.
The Trump administration claims that it is only trying to stop DEI programs that break federal civil rights laws.
