President Donald Trump said there is a lot of distrust between Russia and Ukraine, but he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin may be willing to make a deal to end the war.

“I really think he wants to make a deal,” Trump said. “I might be wrong, but I believe he does.”

Speaking at a press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, Trump said their meeting was an important step toward peace in Ukraine. Macron praised Trump for working with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on a deal involving rare minerals, which could help strengthen Ukraine’s security.

“This peace must not mean Ukraine gives up,” Macron said. “It must not be just a ceasefire without protection. Ukraine must remain independent and be able to negotiate with other countries.”

Macron visited Washington on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. European leaders are trying to encourage Trump to continue supporting Ukraine while he negotiates with Putin.
