Chicago – March 26, 2025

A man has been charged in connection with a deadly shooting and stabbing that happened minutes apart on Sunday in Chicago’s Gage Park neighborhood.

Chicago police say 57-year-old Robert Romo has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and one count of aggravated battery.

Late Sunday night, officers found a 63-year-old man, Richard M. Romo, shot in the head and a 64-year-old woman, Rita Chavez, dead inside an apartment building on South Kedzie Avenue. Police later confirmed that the suspect, Robert Romo, is the brother of the man found dead.

Just minutes after the first crime, Romo went to “Just One More” sports bar, where he threatened the bouncer before entering with a gun and a knife. Inside, he attacked a 44-year-old woman in the bathroom, stabbing her several times. Police arrived at the scene, used a Taser on Romo, and arrested him.

The woman was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and is expected to recover.

Romo is scheduled for a court hearing on Wednesday.
