Chicago – April 06, 2025

European Union countries are coming together to stand up against new tariffs, or extra charges, introduced by U.S. President Donald Trump. These tariffs affect many things Europe sells to the U.S., like steel, aluminum, and cars, and the EU plans to fight back by possibly adding their own tariffs on up to $28 billion worth of U.S. goods, from dental floss to diamonds.

This decision could make the EU join other countries like China and Canada who have already put their own tariffs on U.S. products. People are worried this could start a big trade war, which could make things more expensive for everyone and hurt economies worldwide.

The EU’s main goal is to talk with the U.S. and try to get rid of these extra charges. But if that doesn’t work, they’re ready to fight back with their own charges on U.S. goods. Different countries in the EU have different ideas on what to do. For example, France thinks the EU should do more than just put tariffs on U.S. products, and the French President has even suggested that European companies should stop putting money into the U.S. until everything is sorted out.
