The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has launched a nationwide boycott of Target, urging its 1.8 million members, their families and supporters to shop at local businesses instead. The union says Target has remained silent about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in Minnesota, where the retailer is headquartered.
AFT President Randi Weingarten said the union had given Target opportunities to address its concerns but accused the company of failing to stand with communities affected by federal immigration enforcement. The campaign specifically encourages families to choose alternative retailers for back-to-school supplies.
Target has faced growing pressure over its response to ICE activity in the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security defended ICE, saying the agency enforces federal immigration laws and protects public safety.
The boycott adds to ongoing political and economic pressure on Target.
