An Indian court has denied bail to a group of activists who have spent more than five years in prison without their trial being concluded, drawing renewed attention to the pace of India’s judicial process and the prolonged detention of undertrial prisoners.

The activists were arrested in connection with allegations linked to unlawful activities and security-related offenses. Prosecutors have argued that the charges are serious and that releasing the accused could affect the ongoing legal proceedings. Defense lawyers, however, contend that the extended incarceration without a completed trial violates the principles of justice and the right to a speedy trial.

Human rights organizations have criticized the decision, saying lengthy pretrial detention places an undue burden on defendants and raises concerns about due process. They have urged authorities to expedite the judicial proceedings and ensure that cases are resolved within a reasonable timeframe.

Indian authorities maintain that the case is being handled in accordance with the law and that the courts are independently assessing the evidence and legal arguments presented by both sides.

The case continues to attract national and international attention, highlighting broader debates over judicial delays, civil liberties, and the balance between national security and individual rights in India.
