U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested approximately 10,000 people over a five-day period in late June, marking one of the sharpest surges in immigration enforcement since President Donald Trump returned to office. The increase reflects the administration’s intensified push to expand deportations and strengthen immigration enforcement across the country.
Federal officials say the operations targeted individuals living in the United States without legal authorization, including those with criminal records and people who had ignored final deportation orders. Immigration advocates, however, argue that many of those detained have no violent criminal history and warn that the large-scale raids are creating fear in immigrant communities, separating families, and discouraging people from seeking essential services.
The surge comes as the Trump administration continues to prioritize tougher border security and stricter immigration policies. Civil rights organizations have raised concerns over due process and detention conditions, while administration officials maintain that the operations are necessary to enforce immigration laws and enhance public safety.
