A guest of U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar was arrested Tuesday night after standing and protesting during former President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol.
According to Capitol Police, the individual was taken into custody on charges related to disorderly conduct after refusing repeated requests to sit down and cease disrupting the joint session of Congress. The protest occurred midway through the speech, briefly drawing attention from lawmakers and cameras before officers escorted the guest out of the House chamber.
Rep. Omar’s office said in a statement that while peaceful protest is a constitutional right, guests are expected to follow House rules during official proceedings. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported and that the address continued without further incident.
The case remains under review, and officials have not yet released additional details about the protester’s identity or potential court dates.
