Chicago – April 28, 2026

Iran has proposed easing tensions in the Middle East by offering to end its control over the vital Strait of Hormuz in exchange for the United States lifting its blockade and halting ongoing conflict, according to regional officials. The proposal would delay discussions on Iran’s nuclear program until a later stage.

U.S. President Donald Trump is not expected to accept the offer, leaving both sides in a fragile standoff despite an existing ceasefire. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traveled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, following stops in Pakistan, as diplomatic efforts continue.

Meanwhile, global airlines are canceling flights due to rising oil prices and jet fuel shortages linked to the conflict. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stressed that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains Washington’s primary concern.
