Chicago January 09, 2025
Thursday, January 9, 2025, supporters and friends of the late President Jimmy Carter gathered at Washington National Cathedral for his state funeral service. The service began at 10 a.m. EST, as declared by President Biden as a National Day of Mourning for the 39th president, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 100.
The funeral service was attended by the “presidents’ club,” including President Biden, former presidents Clinton, George W. Bush, Obama, and President-elect Trump. This marked the first time the five living men who once occupied the White House have come together since the 2018 funeral of former President George H.W. Bush.
Tributes to President Carter began on January 4, with a motorcade carrying his body through his hometown of Plains, Georgia. He then lay in repose at the Carter Center and the Capitol, where the public could pay their respects.
President Carter was a devoted Christian and public servant, who won the presidency in 1976. He was guided by his faith and determined to restore faith in government after Watergate and Vietnam. After leaving office, Carter continued to serve through his work with Habitat for Humanity and writing 32 books.
