A Muslim cloth vendor has died from severe injuries after allegedly being assaulted by a mob in India’s eastern state of Bihar, raising concerns over mob violence and communal targeting. The incident occurred in Nawada district and is currently under investigation by local authorities.

Incident Details

Mohammad Athar Hussain, a resident of Gagan Diwan village, was attacked on December 5 near Bhattapar village under the Roh police station limits. Hussain, who sold clothes using a bicycle, had reportedly stopped to look for puncture repair after his bicycle broke down.

According to his brother, Mohammad Shakib Alam, a group of villagers intercepted Hussain, questioned him about his name and occupation, and then launched a violent assault. He alleged that the attackers brutally beat Hussain, cut his ears, and assaulted him with a heated rod.

Victim’s Statement and Allegations

In a video recorded following the attack, Hussain claimed the assailants questioned his identity, forcibly pulled him off his bicycle, robbed him of 18,000 rupees, and subjected him to physical abuse. He further alleged that the group later expanded to 15–20 people, who stripped him and branded his body with a heated iron rod.

Medical Treatment and Death

After the assault, Hussain was initially taken to a primary health center before being referred to Nawada Sadar Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Pawapuri VIMS, where he succumbed to his injuries late Friday night. Authorities have confirmed that a post-mortem examination has been conducted.

Police Action and Arrests

Police officials stated that six adults have been arrested and two minors detained in connection with the case so far. In a complaint filed on December 6, Hussain’s wife, Shabnam Parveen, named 10 residents of Bhattapar village as accused, while another 10 individuals remain unidentified.

Initially, police registered charges related to unlawful assembly, rioting, and causing grievous harm under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following Hussain’s death, murder charges were added to the case.

Cross-Complaint and Ongoing Investigation

A counter-complaint filed by one of the accused alleges that Hussain attempted a burglary on the night of the incident. Police have confirmed that both complaints are being investigated to determine the sequence of events and establish accountability.

Nawada Superintendent of Police Abhinav Dhiman said a Special Investigation Team was formed promptly. “Four suspects were arrested within 24 hours, and four more were detained on Saturday. Raids are ongoing to apprehend the remaining accused,” he said.

Community Tensions and Next Steps

The incident has sparked outrage and renewed debate over mob violence and the safety of minority communities in the region. Authorities have assured that a thorough and impartial investigation is underway, and further arrests may follow as the probe continues.

This case remains under active investigation, with police examining medical reports, video evidence, and witness statements to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the fatal assault.
