Chicago – April 01, 2026

More than 9,500 Palestinians are currently held in Israeli prisons, according to human rights groups, including around 350 children and over 70 women, with the vast majority being adult men.

These numbers have become the focus of growing concern after Israel passed a controversial new law this week introducing the death penalty for certain Palestinian prisoners.

Israel’s parliament approved the law on Monday, making execution by hanging the default punishment for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks in military courts.

For the thousands of Palestinians already in custody, the law has created fear and uncertainty, especially among families of detainees.

  • Prisoners accused of serious attacks could now face execution instead of long-term imprisonment
  • Critics warn the law could expand to affect future detainees in large numbers
  • Military courts—where conviction rates are reported to be extremely high—could play a central role
