Chicago – July 15, 2026

Senate Democrats on Tuesday blocked the advancement of a roughly $1 trillion annual defense policy bill, protesting President Donald Trump’s handling of the ongoing war with Iran and arguing that Congress should not approve a major military spending increase without greater oversight of the conflict. The procedural vote failed 50-46, falling short of the 60 votes required to move the legislation forward. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said lawmakers could not support the measure while the administration continued military operations without a clear strategy or congressional authorization.

Republicans criticized the move, saying the bill includes critical funding for military readiness, new weapons programs and pay raises for service members. Despite the setback, Republican leaders indicated they would continue efforts to revive the legislation through further negotiations. The National Defense Authorization Act has historically received bipartisan backing, but the Iran conflict has emerged as a major point of contention, making this year’s debate one of the most politically divisive in recent years.
