Chicago – August 07, 2026

President Donald Trump has signed a new executive order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship and addressing what his administration describes as “birth tourism,” the practice of traveling to the United States to give birth so a child acquires U.S. citizenship. The order directs federal agencies to strengthen enforcement against visa misuse and review policies related to citizenship for children born in the country.

The administration argues the measures are intended to prevent abuse of the immigration system and protect the integrity of U.S. citizenship. However, legal experts and immigrant advocacy groups contend that the order conflicts with the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which has long been interpreted to grant citizenship to nearly all children born on U.S. soil.

The executive action is expected to face immediate legal challenges, continuing a long-running national debate over immigration policy, constitutional rights, and the limits of presidential authority.
