Seventeen Democratic officials have filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration, accusing it of intimidating healthcare providers into stopping gender-affirming care for transgender youth. This comes after eight major hospitals and hospital systems announced they would stop or restrict the care, despite it being allowed under state law. The latest hospital to make this announcement was UI Health in Chicago, which made the decision just last Thursday.

The Trump administration has been actively working to stop gender-affirming care for minors, sending subpoenas to providers and investigating them for fraud. In a news release, the administration even boasted about hospitals halting treatments. However, Democratic officials argue that this is an attempt to impose a nationwide ban on the treatment, which is unlawful since there is no federal statute banning the care for minors.

The lawsuit was filed by attorneys general from 15 states and the District of Columbia, along with the governor of Pennsylvania, in U.S. District Court in Boston. This move is seen as a pushback against the Trump administration’s efforts to restrict access to gender-affirming care for transgender youth.
