US-India Trade Tensions Escalate Over Russian Oil

US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose massive tariffs on India if it continues to buy oil from Russia. Trump claims that India’s actions are “unfair” to American interests and undermine Western sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. Speaking at a campaign rally, Trump warned that tariffs could be as high as 60%, 70%, or even 100% if India doesn’t stop purchasing Russian oil.

The Kremlin has swiftly condemned Trump’s threat, labeling it “illegal and unacceptable.” Russian officials argue that such tariffs would violate international trade rules and harm global economic stability. India, on the other hand, has defended its energy purchases, citing the need for affordable oil to sustain economic growth. Despite pressure from the US, India has maintained that its oil imports from Russia are necessary and will continue.
