Chicago – December 14, 2025

President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as negotiators from the US and India work to resolve differences over an elusive trade agreement.

Modi on Thursday described the conversation as “warm and engaging” and said they “reviewed the progress in our bilateral relations and discussed regional and international developments.”

“India and the U.S. will continue to work together for global peace, stability and prosperity,” Modi posted on X.

It was the fourth call by the two leaders since Trump imposed hefty tariffs of 50% on Indian goods in August, and shows the two sides are taking gradual steps to reset ties. Trade negotiators, though, appear to be no closer to clinching a deal despite months of talks, including this week in New Delhi.

Sergio Gor, the US ambassador to India, described the conversation between Trump and Modi as “a great call between two friends,” according to a post on X. Modi, however, didn’t refer to Trump as his “friend,” as he’s previously done in the past in his social media posts.
