As House Republicans work on a massive bill to advance President Donald Trump’s agenda, Medicaid has become a point of contention. Some Republican lawmakers are worried that the proposed spending cuts could harm their constituents.
The House Energy & Commerce Committee has been tasked with cutting $880 billion, which some Republicans fear could lead to severe cuts to Medicaid and other federal safety net programs. “I’m concerned that $880 billion in cuts is likely very steep cuts to Medicaid,” said Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb.
Conservatives argue that significant cuts could be made by implementing Medicaid work requirements. However, skeptics believe that these cuts would go beyond what work requirements could cover.
Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., expressed concerns about the impact of the cuts on hospitals and organizations that serve the developmentally disabled. “We want to ensure that it’s not going to hurt… our hospitals, or our organizations that serve the developmentally disabled,” she said.
