Turkish authorities have denied permission for an American LGBTQ+ cruise ship to dock at a port in the country’s Aegean region, citing concerns over “public sensitivities” and “moral standards.” The vessel, carrying hundreds of passengers on a Mediterranean voyage, was informed that it would not be allowed to make its scheduled stop despite prior planning.
Turkish officials said the decision was taken to preserve public order and reflect the country’s social and cultural values. Cruise organizers expressed disappointment, calling the move discriminatory and saying passengers were deprived of the opportunity to visit Turkey. Human rights and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups also criticized the decision, arguing it undermines freedom of movement and equal treatment.
The ship instead altered its itinerary and continued to another destination. The incident has drawn international attention and renewed debate over LGBTQ+ rights in Turkey, where Pride events have faced increasing restrictions in recent years.
