Chicago January 1, 2025

The United States Treasury Department recently reported that hackers from China broke into their computer systems. This incident led to the hackers seeing some unclassified documents and other information from the Treasury.

The attack happened earlier this month, and the hackers got in by getting past a security measure from a company called BeyondTrust, which helps the Treasury with computer issues.

BeyondTrust noticed something was wrong on December 2nd, but it took a few days to figure out it was a serious hack. By December 8th, the Treasury knew about the problem and took steps to deal with it. They made sure the hackers couldn’t get into their systems anymore and took BeyondTrust’s services offline to check everything thoroughly.

The Treasury is now working with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI to understand more about the hack and how much it might have affected their work. They’re calling it a “major cybersecurity incident.”

China, however, says it didn’t do anything wrong. The Chinese government and its representatives have stated that they don’t support hacking and that the accusations against them are not based on real proof.

They have also pointed out that the U.S. has accused China of hacking before, just as China has accused the U.S. of similar actions in the past. Both countries have a history of blaming each other for cyberattacks.
