Chicago – November 03, 2025

Canada has intensified its crackdown on international student visa fraud, resulting in the rejection of nearly three-fourths of Indian study permit applicants as of August 2025. Government data reveals that about 74% of Indian student visa applications were denied, a sharp rise from 32% the previous year.

This surge in rejections follows discoveries in 2023 of nearly 1,550 fraudulent letters of acceptance, mostly from India. Canada’s immigration department responded with enhanced verification systems and raised financial requirements to ensure only genuine students qualify for visas.

The number of Indian applicants has also plummeted, falling from 20,900 in August 2023 to just 4,515 in August 2025. While the Indian Embassy in Ottawa acknowledges the increased rejection rate, it reaffirms that visa issuance is Canada’s sovereign right and praises the academic excellence Indian students bring to Canadian institutions.

Despite strained diplomatic ties following political controversies, Canadian officials emphasize the importance of maintaining the integrity of the immigration system while continuing to welcome Indian students.

This crackdown reflects Canada’s effort to curb visa fraud and misuse, with authorities closely scrutinizing applicants’ credentials to protect the integrity of its academic ecosystem and immigration processes.
