Ted Turner, the founder of CNN and a towering figure in modern television, has died at the age of 87. CNN said Turner passed away peacefully on Wednesday, surrounded by family, according to a Turner Enterprises statement.
Turner launched Cable News Network in 1980, creating the world’s first 24-hour news channel and helping redefine how audiences followed breaking events. His rise from Atlanta broadcaster to media mogul also included building TBS and TNT, along with ownership of the Atlanta Braves.
Known for his bold style and outsized ambition, Turner became one of the most influential figures in U.S. media. He also earned recognition for his philanthropy, including major support for United Nations causes.
Turner had publicly disclosed a Lewy body dementia diagnosis in 2018.
