Chicago – March 22, 2026

Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran on March 21, 2026, demanding the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its power plants, starting with the largest. The strait, vital for 20% of global oil shipments, has been effectively closed since late February amid ongoing conflict, disrupting energy markets worldwide.

Iran responded defiantly, with its military, parliament, and officials warning of immediate retaliation. Tehran threatened a “complete closure” of the strait until any damaged power plants are rebuilt, alongside strikes on U.S.-linked power plants, desalination facilities, and regional energy infrastructure. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that critical assets across the region would face “irreversible destruction.”

Trump’s Truth Social post marked a rhetorical escalation, just days after hints of de-escalation in the four-week war. Iranian officials, including a military spokesman, vowed to target U.S. and Israeli facilities if attacked. Analysts warn of potential Gulf blackouts and economic shocks as the deadline nears.

Global markets brace for volatility, with U.S. Marines deploying to the region. Diplomatic efforts remain stalled.
