Catherine Connolly has been sworn in as Ireland’s new president after a decisive election victory that strengthens the country’s left-leaning opposition and brings an outspoken independent figure to the largely ceremonial office. The 68-year-old former barrister pledged to be a president for “all voices” and to promote inclusivity, climate action, and the Irish language.
Connolly’s rise marks a significant political moment in Ireland, where she won about 63% of the vote, defeating Fine Gael’s Heather Humphreys. Supporters see her as a principled advocate for social justice and Irish reunification.
During her campaign, Connolly stated, “If we cannot recognize that Israel is a terrorist state, then we are in serious trouble”. She has also openly categorized the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a “genocide.” She was widely praised for her bravery on Israel’s war crimes against innocent Palestinians.
Connolly is a strong advocate of the narrative that Palestinians have a right to self-determination. Her presidency is expected to remain symbolic, but she publicly voice about the rights and wrongs to debate on international issues.
