Pope Leo made a “strong appeal” to the global community on Wednesday to end the nearly two-year conflict between Israel and Hamas, calling for a permanent ceasefire, the release of hostages held in Gaza and the provision of humanitarian aid.

“I once again issue a strong appeal … so that an end may be put to the conflict in the Holy Land, which has caused so much terror, destruction, and death,” the pontiff said in his weekly audience at the Vatican.

Pope Leo has appealed for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, urging both sides to end the cycle of violence that has claimed thousands of lives. In his statement, the pontiff emphasized the urgent need for humanitarian corridors to deliver aid to civilians caught in the crossfire.

The Pope also called for the swift release of hostages held in Gaza, stressing that innocent lives must not be used as bargaining tools. He urged world leaders and international organizations to intensify diplomatic efforts to bring peace to the region, noting that “lasting security cannot be built on war, but on dialogue and justice.”

The Vatican’s plea comes amid mounting international pressure for de-escalation, as the conflict continues to fuel a humanitarian crisis and heighten instability across the Middle East.
