Did you know that the first and only woman to serve as the Chief Minister of Assam was a distinguished alumna of Aligarh Muslim University? Syeda Anwara Taimur’s journey to the helm of Assam’s government began with a strong academic foundation at AMU.

Education

She was a brilliant student who pursued her higher education at Aligarh Muslim University, specializing in Economics. Her time at AMU instilled in her the confidence and leadership skills required to navigate the complex political landscape of the 1970s and 80s.

Chief Minister (1980–1981)

She remains a monumental figure in Indian political history. She took charge of Assam during one of its most challenging periods, becoming the first Muslim woman Chief Minister of any state in independent India.

Cabinet Veteran

Beyond her tenure as CM, she served as a minister multiple times, handling portfolios like Education, Agriculture, and Public Works. She also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha, representing the interests of Assam at the national level.

Why She Matters?

Syeda Anwara Taimur was a pioneer who proved that leadership knows no gender. At a time when women were rarely seen in high political offices, she led with grit and grace. She remains an inspiration for every girl in the Northeast and across India.

A true daughter of Assam and a pride of Aligarh!
