Chicago – January 01, 2026
President Donald Trump has announced that he is withdrawing National Guard troops from Chicago, Los Angeles and Portland, framing the move as a shift rather than an end to federal intervention in those cities.
The decision follows a recent US Supreme Court ruling that blocked his bid to deploy the Guard to Chicago to protect federal immigration officers, dealing a significant blow to his broader enforcement strategy.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said the Guard was being removed “despite” what he called greatly reduced crime due to the presence of “great Patriots,” while warning that federal forces could return “in a much different and stronger form” if crime rises again.
Legal experts noted that the Supreme Court ruling narrowed the president’s authority to federalize the Guard for law enforcement, though Trump could still seek to rely on the Insurrection Act to deploy regular military forces domestically, a prospect that has stirred intense political and legal debate.
