Maulana Hasrat Mohani was a remarkable figure in India’s freedom struggle, remembered as a poet, journalist, scholar, and fearless revolutionary. Born in 1875 in Mohan, Uttar Pradesh, his real name was Fazlul Hasan, but he became widely known by his pen name Hasrat Mohani. He combined intellectual depth with revolutionary courage and devoted his life to the cause of justice and independence.

Hasrat Mohani holds a unique place in Indian history as the first leader to formally demand complete independence (Poorna Swaraj) for India. At a time when many leaders were still asking for limited self-rule under British authority, he boldly declared that nothing less than full freedom was acceptable. This demand later became a central goal of the Indian national movement.

He was also closely associated with the revolutionary slogan “Inquilab Zindabad” (Long Live the Revolution), which became a powerful cry against colonial rule and inspired countless freedom fighters. His revolutionary activities led to multiple imprisonments, but hardship never weakened his resolve.

Apart from politics, Hasrat Mohani was a distinguished Urdu poet whose ghazals are still admired for their beauty and emotional depth. Despite his radical political ideas, he lived a simple life and stood firmly for honesty, equality, and human dignity.

Maulana Hasrat Mohani’s legacy lies in his courage to speak the truth, his early call for an independent Indian state, and his lasting contribution to both literature and the freedom struggle. His life remains a symbol of intellectual bravery and revolutionary spirit.
