President Donald Trump announced he is sending White House border czar Tom Homan to Minnesota to oversee immigration enforcement, following the fatal shooting of U.S. citizen Alex Pretti by a Border Patrol agent in Minneapolis. This marks the second such incident involving federal agents this month, sparking protests, lawsuits, and tensions with state officials.
In a Truth Social post, Trump stated Homan—known for his tough stance during his first term as acting ICE director—will report directly to him and coordinate operations targeting “criminal illegal aliens.” The move comes amid a federal crackdown criticized by Minnesota Democrats for endangering public safety.
Trump also revealed a “very good call” with Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, claiming they are now “on a similar wavelength.” Walz’s office confirmed the “productive” discussion, where he urged impartial state-led investigations and fewer federal agents. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem welcomed Homan’s arrival as “good news for peace, safety, and accountability.”
A federal judge heard arguments Monday in a lawsuit seeking to halt the operations, expressing skepticism over federal motives. It remains unclear if the thaw will lead to de-escalation.
