Chicago – November 13, 2025

The US Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against California, challenging the state’s new congressional voting maps that were approved by voters through Proposition 50.

The Justice Department argues that these new maps unfairly favor the Democratic Party by adding five additional districts likely to elect Democratic representatives for the 2026 midterm elections. This legal action comes amid a high-stakes battle over redistricting, which has become a key factor in controlling the balance of power in the House of Representatives.

Proposition 50 was passed by 64% of California voters and is viewed by critics, including the Trump administration, as a partisan move that cancels out Republican gains from recent redistricting efforts in states like Texas. The lawsuit accuses California’s new voting maps of violating the Constitution by engaging in racial gerrymandering and political manipulation.

This clash sets the stage for a significant political and legal confrontation between the Republican-led Justice Department and Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, whose administration backs the new maps as a way to counterbalance redistricting efforts in other states.
