ALIGARH, November 15 — The Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), marked World Diabetes Day with a series of outreach and awareness activities dedicated to improving diabetes care and education. The event aimed particularly to support individuals living with Type 1 diabetes mellitus.
As part of the observance, the Centre distributed around one hundred glucometers free of cost to patients to encourage regular blood glucose monitoring and promote self-management of diabetes. An interactive quiz competition was also held to engage participants in learning more about the condition, with prizes awarded to winners for their enthusiasm and awareness.
Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Mohammad Khalid, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, emphasized the importance of disciplined blood sugar monitoring, balanced nutrition, and maintaining a positive outlook while managing diabetes. He urged patients to stay consistent with treatment plans and lifestyle modifications for better long-term outcomes.
Prof. Amjad Ali Rizvi, Principal and Chief Medical Superintendent of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, shared expert insights on effective diabetes prevention and management. He highlighted the significance of lifestyle discipline, regular exercise, and adherence to medical guidance in preventing complications.
In her welcome address, Prof. Shilu Shafiq, Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, reiterated the Centre’s commitment to advancing patient care, research, and public awareness on diabetes management. The programme proceedings were conducted by Dr. Ahmed Alam, who also coordinated the distribution of gifts and glucometers.
Prof. Hamid Ashraf concluded the event with a vote of thanks, expressing appreciation to the faculty, participants, and guests for their contributions to the initiative.
The World Diabetes Day observance at AMU reflected the institution’s dedication to public health advocacy and community engagement in tackling chronic lifestyle diseases.
