Chicago – August 13, 2025

President Donald Trump recently said he might send the National Guard to Chicago to fight crime, a statement that caused an uproar. He even called Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker “incompetent.”

Mayor Johnson quickly responded, saying that such a move would break the law. He pointed to a rule called Posse Comitatus, which stops the federal government from sending troops into American cities for law enforcement purposes.

Johnson said Trump has no legal right to send soldiers into Chicago, adding that this idea would violate the Constitution. He also noted that Trump has been convicted 34 times for breaking laws and dismissed the president’s suggestion as unlawful.

Later, Governor Pritzker also reacted to Trump’s comments. At a press conference, he called Trump’s suggestion “dangerous” and criticized him for undermining the Constitution.

Pritzker said that Trump’s behavior was only making the situation worse and warned that Trump was testing how far he could go in breaking the rules. He also mentioned that Trump’s actions were dividing the country, which he said was the opposite of what leaders in Chicago were working to fix.
