Chicago – July 30, 2025

Laura Dahlmeier, a famous German biathlon athlete and two-time Olympic gold medalist, has died at the age of 31. She was an experienced mountain climber who was on a trip in the Karakoram mountains in Pakistan when a rockfall struck her on July 28. The accident happened at a very high altitude, around 5,700 meters above sea level.

Her climbing partner quickly called for help, and a rescue team was sent to the area. Because the mountain is very remote, a helicopter could only reach the site the next morning, on July 29. Sadly, the rescue team found that Laura had passed away, and the search was called off that evening.

Her representatives shared the news: “Laura Dahlmeier died in a mountain accident on Laila Peak, which is 6,069 meters high, in Pakistan’s Karakoram range.” Laura’s family said goodbye to her with a loving message, calling her a kind and warm person who showed everyone the importance of chasing dreams while staying true to oneself.

People around the world sent their condolences. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised Laura as “an exceptional sportswoman.” At the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Laura made history by becoming the first woman to win both the sprint and pursuit biathlon events at the same Games.

Laura Dahlmeier’s talent and spirit will be remembered by many. Her fans and family mourn the loss of a remarkable athlete and person.
