Chicago – May 27, 2026

The United States has carried out fresh strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile sites and vessels believed to be laying mines, according to U.S. officials. The operation was described as self-defense and came amid renewed tension between Washington and Tehran, with the strikes reported near Bandar Abbas, a strategic port city on the Strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Central Command said the action was intended to protect American troops from threats posed by Iranian forces and to maintain a cautious posture during the fragile ceasefire. Iranian state media reported explosions in the area, but independent confirmation of the full damage was not immediately available.

The latest strikes add to a months-long cycle of attacks and retaliation that has destabilized the region and raised concerns about further escalation. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global shipping route, making any military activity there especially significant for energy markets and regional security.

The development underscores how quickly the conflict can widen, even as diplomatic efforts continue in parallel.
