Chicago – May 28, 2026

Washington and Tehran have reached a tentative agreement to extend their current ceasefire by 60 days and launch formal negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program, U.S. officials confirmed. The memorandum of understanding, reported first by Axios and verified by Fox News and the BBC, awaits final sign-off from President Donald Trump.

Under the proposed deal, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen to international shipping, with Iran given 30 days to clear naval mines. The U.S. would lift its blockade and grant sanction waivers to resume Iran’s oil exports. Trump was briefed Wednesday and requested “a couple of days to deliberate,” according to sources familiar with the talks.

The agreement is not a final peace treaty but a framework enabling technical discussions on Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile and nuclear enrichment limits— unresolved issues from nearly a decade of stalled diplomacy. Regional tensions remain high amid ongoing missile exchanges and drone interceptions, making the ceasefire critical to preventing further escalation.

If approved, this would mark the first serious nuclear negotiations between the two nations since Trump withdrew from the 2015 JCPOA.
