Chicago – September 10, 2025
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has voiced deep concern over President Donald Trump’s recent threats to deploy National Guard troops and federal agents to Chicago, framing the actions as a dangerous power grab ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to send military personnel to Chicago under the guise of combating crime and illegal immigration. However, Pritzker contends these moves are politically motivated attempts to intimidate and exert control over the city, especially targeting its large Latino community.
Pritzker has condemned Trump’s approach as “un-American” and warned that any deployment without state approval would face legal challenges. He stressed that Chicago’s safety requires genuine public safety support, not militarized political theater. The governor also criticized a recent Supreme Court decision that loosens restrictions on immigration enforcement tactics.
Amid increasing federal enforcement activity under “Operation Midway Blitz,” Pritzker and city officials remain united in opposing actions they see as undermining constitutional rights and normalizing authoritarian tactics. The Illinois governor underscored the importance of protecting local democracy and vowed to take the Trump administration to court if necessary to defend the city and its residents from federal overreach.
This issue adds tension to the political landscape as the 2026 elections approach.
